ISA Annual Cultural Function 2007

Once we had this squabble that since last few years Indian Students Association (ISA) at Kansas State University is changing their annual culture festivals’ name. My question is how important is that? What difference is it making if the function name is ‘Sanskriti’ or ‘Kshitij’ or ‘Tarang’? Who cares about name? What we need is one day when we can organize, co-ordinate, perform and enjoy. It is as simple as that.

Anyway, we just had our annual culture function “Sanskriti” and it was quite good. I am totally ISA guy and I will not criticize anybody who is involved with ISA activities. As I know how much efforts are required for these events. According to me it is very easy for anyone to comment and criticize what ISA does. Few idiots drinks on Friday nights and decide to remove their own rage so they start “XYZ daily” nonsense. When ever they drink they come up with one issue and write a post and create controversies. But when money gets over to buy drinks they fight among themselves for $ 13. Classy people really…..

According to me function went really well. I went to the exhibition and I saw it was arranged very nicely. My only request and suggestion is, please do not put written explanation. Somebody needs to be there to explain exhibits. Make it more interactive. If you have some music instruments, play them and let people try their hands on the instruments. If games are there, you play and teach people how to play. If cooking range is kept, explain them how you cook, how you use them in your kitchen. These attract and amuse a lot of people. In all, exhibition was alright. For the first time in two years of my stay here, I saw complete cultural program. I really liked it. New performances like Fashion Show by Aditi, Video by Varun were fabulous. My personal favorites were dance performance by Ranjit and song “Munbe Vaa” by Anupama. With few glitches program went well. In the end dinner was also very good. Everyone liked it. I will say my good friend Sushanth Gudlur aka ‘The President’ aka ‘Royal Ramasami’ did a wonderful job.

To talk more about “Mr. President this year”, here are few comments from my friend Sushanth Gudlur about my committee last year.

“Looks like these days EVEYONE is picking on the ISA for its faults (it’s becoming a hobby, I guess). It’s so much easier to find faults than to try and do a job properly. Why don't we give those poor chaps a little break and let them do what they think is right.

My Reply: Dude...My eyes are on your committee and I am going to pick you. :) That is my hobby this year. ;)

“I wonder how the present ISA committee members get feedback from the community regarding the various events the ISA plans? It would be interesting to hear the answer from the horse's mouth.”

My Reply: Who is the horse now??? :)

My next post will have some more inside information about how an ISA committee works. What they deserve and what they get?

About the name of the function....I would have totally agreed with you except that, a few days back, one of my friend told me something about "unique identity". "Sanskriti" had always been ISA event's name for many years. For a few years, ISA changed its name to "Tarang", "Kshitij"...and so forth. But the deal really is, how much people are gonna remember them in a long run. If a K-state alumni decides to lookup for event details, info or some photographs online, he can always type "ksu isa sanskriti" in google and he can get the info very easily. But if we are gonna change names, every now and then, it will be a daunting task to relate K-state's ISA with its annual function.

Are you telling me that criticizing an organization is "idiotic"? Why do you think people study "Mass communication" and work in press.
Are you telling me that drinking and writing in a blog is "idiotic"? I did drink yesterday and I am in fact replying in "your" blog.

Albert Camus once said, "“A free press can of course be good or bad, but, most certainly, without freedom it will never be anything but bad.".

I totally agree with him. If an organization conducts an event, it should expect both good comments and some bad ones. It is in fact "freedom". I value freedom and I know everyone does it too. So, blaming people for writing a blog, for commenting on the above mentioned organization is "totally bullocks".(Just a classy English touch!!!)

And, Classy is not calling K-state graduates, who expressed their views on a blog and who are willing to show the other dimension to the organization as "idiots".

Fighting for $13 is not anyone's problem. It may be not classy for people who have the $13, but for people who don't have it, it's a fight for "survival".
